Earlier this week, Angels Third Baseman Chone Figgins suffered a broken finger that looks to keep him out for the first month of the season. The Angels are likely to start utilityman Maicer Izturis at the hot corner while Figgins is out, but this injury has got us thinking.
The Halos spent all offseason trying to bring in big bats, but struck out when they went after guys like Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano and Todd Helton. However, arguably the biggest power prospect in the minors happens to be Brandon Wood, who just happens to be in the Angels organization. Wood is a natural shortstop, however, what position did the Angels move him to this spring...third base.
Why not have B-Wood start the season with the big club, platooning with Izturis at third. If Wood looks like he can handle the job then you just filled your need for a power hitter, and then you have Figgins available to trade when he gets back.
Figgins definitely has some value on the market, and it's not a secret that the Angels shopped him this offseason. If Wood were to struggle, send him back to the minors for another year until he's ready, but to me it seems like it would make sense.
If only Bill Stoneman and Mike Scioscia read LAist...

Wood probably isn't ready for the Show yet; he hasn't even had a full season of AAA under his belt. He could be something interesting, but he's got to show he can keep his strikeouts under control before he shows himself to be a useful player.
