LA Fire Department blog lets us know that "all fireworks, even the so-called "safe and sane" variety are illegal in the City of Los Angeles, and have been outlawed since World War II!" Don't know what to listen to while you're not letting off fireworks? Try streaming the new Johnny Cash record (the one he recorded with Rick Rubin) on his deathbed. It's free. Includes the last song he ever wrote "Like The 309" - Myspace

Holy Home Depot! The Long Beach Press Telegram has this disturbing headline Day Laborers Hired For Sex, as well as some results from a 2004 poll:

In a survey of 450 day laborers at the various sites listed on the Web site, 38 percent said they had been solicited for sex while seeking work. Ten percent of them accepted the offer. A majority of those said they did not use condoms. Of those who accepted the offer, 86 percent denied being gay. The same 86 percent said they agreed to have sex for money because they hadn't worked that day and needed the money - LBPT

Britain Falls Out of Love with America, the headline reads. "There has probably never been a time when America was held in such low esteem on this side of the Atlantic." - Telegraph UK

The kids are still street racing. The kids are still getting hurt. - CBS2

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead.
