Walking to the car after dinner was cold. The kind of cold that settles into the tips of your ears, that makes you plunge your hands in your pockets, that makes you wear socks. And so many of our adobe abodes are underinsulated that getting inside can be, we know, not much warmer than hanging out in the driveway. So we've done a little research. If you've got time to spare on Sunday, Target has knocked 30% off all space heaters — and humidifiers, because it's a dry cold. If you don't mind dropping a little more money, Home Depot has new gas stoves that look like woodburning stoves but aren't all sooty. Or maybe it's time to get fancy and outfit your home with a gorgeous new fireplace and mantel. We'll bring the marshmallows!

It was definitely not a dry cold tonight, where'd all this rain come from?
It's 2º in Chicago right now. I don't think we really have any right to complain.
My heat went out once in December '04, which was a cold, rainy, miserable month here. I was bitching about it to some friends online, and one of the first responses was: "You're in Los Angeles. Why do you need a heater?" I think it was all of 15º in Chicago at the time and maybe 25º in New York, so it kinda put things in perspective.
As a former Angelino now in exile in Philadelphia, I must say you are talking dirty to me here. It's a toasty 19 degrees with a nice little wind whipping across the city this morning. I ache for a little taste of that nice Los Angeles cold.
