LA is On Track
Looking for something to do this weekend? LAist recommends you head on down to Carson's ADT Event Center for the Track Cycling World Championships. What is that? Well, Phil Anschutz and co. (aka the Sports Lords of LA) think cycling is the next budding sport in SoCal, and invested $15 million in North America's only indoor velodrome to prove it. Admittedly, LAist has not watched much track cycling before, but the thought of bycycles going around a track is much more appealing than say, watching NASCAR.
In addition to this event, which is pretty big in nations like Australia and Great Britain, LA added to its cycling resume today with the International Cycling Union announcing it would put the newly-created Tour of California on the 2006 Pro Tour schedule.
Now how cool does that sound? Imagine a Tour de France style bike race going through the Sierra Nevada's, over the Golden Gate Bridge, down the coast and into the Santa Monica Mountains, and perhaps finishing up at the Santa Monica Pier? How much fun would it be for the world's greatest cyclists to pedal down Sunset Boulevard? The actual course hasn't been announced, but we're already geeked up for the 2006 Tour of California.
