The Death of Journalism...

...And foreign language and theater arts and hotel management and electronics and over 130 jobs.

To follow-up our story from yesterday about Oxnard College's Board of Trustees Meeting in which the college paper and Journalism department were at risk of being shut down, we're saddened to tell you that at the end of the semester, they will be.

The Ventura County Star reports that Toni Allen, head of the department, is being laid off as well along with 14 other full-time faculty and 117 part-time or temporary instructors. Oxnard College is $7.5 million dollars short and the Board decided to trim the fat from their most valuable asset: teachers.

Students and professors packed Oxnard Union High School to argue their case but lost anyway.

Moorpark College and Ventura College also face budget shortfalls but not as extreme as Oxnard.
