$11.6 Million Setup Man

The hounds will be out for blood in tomorrow's paper after Darren Dreifort blew a second game in the eighth inning since the Dodgers gave up Guillermo Mota. Dreifort had a 5-3 lead going into the eighth, before the Reds came back to win 6-5.

At LAist, we acknowledged that the riskiest part of Paul DePodesta's deadline deals was giving up Mota. But let's hope Jim Tracy and the Dodgers realize one thing: Darren Dreifort is a slightly above-average middle reliever, and has no business being the team's setup man.

The Dodgers would like to believe that Darren Dreifort is somewhat useful, considering the $11.6 million gift he'll get this year thanks to Kevin Malone's stupidity. But you can't pretend a player is something he's not. Giovanni Carrara, Duaner Sanchez, or even Yhency Brazoban can adequately handle the setup role on a regular basis. Or Eric Gagne is more than capable of pitching in the eighth a bit.

In the meantime, with the Dodgers NL West lead at six and a half games, LAist is hoping the Azul don't get too cocky.
