Check-in with LAWA Chief of Staff as LAX experiences tech problems, flight cancellations

A major internet outage affecting Microsoft is disrupting flights, banks, media outlets and companies across the world, with problems continuing hours after the technology company said it was gradually fixing an issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services. Airlines and airports in the United States, Europe, Australia, India and elsewhere were reporting problems, with some flights grounded. Retail outlets, banks, railway companies and hospitals in several parts of the world were also affected in what appeared to be an unprecedented internet disruption. Airports across Southern California have also been affected by the outage, including LAX, Burbank and John Wayne in Orange County.

Today on AirTalk, Austin Cross talks to Becca Doten, chief of staff for the Los Angeles World Airports, about what there is to know as LAX experiences some technical problems as a result of the outage, and what those flying need to know.

Trump’s closing words at the RNC

Last night, former president Donald Trump accepted the Republican party nomination and gave his first speech since surviving the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania just six days ago.

The Republican National Convention celebrated former President Donald Trump not just as a party leader but a living martyr who survived a would-be assassin’s bullet and is ready to work for everyday Americans after a sweeping victory in November.

The portrayals of unity, including in Trump’s first speech since he was injured in the assassination attempt last Saturday, sought to erase the image of a man whose presidency often swirled in chaos and infighting and ended with a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Democrats have repeatedly wielded images of that day to try to thwart his return and have spotlighted his recurring use of inflammatory and hardline rhetoric. Marisa Lagos, correspondent for KQED’s California Politics and Government Desk, and Scott Shafer, senior editor for KQED's Politics and Government Desk, join Austin to recap the last day of the RNC and Trump’s closing speech.

A former screenwriter turned therapist talks mental health in the entertainment industry

Hollywood’s film and television industry is suffering from an economic downturn, unable to fully recover from the halt to production caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the dual SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. Workers in the entertainment industry continue to struggle to find work as many studios have slowed production and limited the amount of projects they are releasing. It is a stressful time for anyone working in Hollywood. One person who understands just how stressful and emotionally taxing working in film and television can be is Phil Stark, former screenwriter turned therapist. Stark is perhaps best known for being the screenwriter of the early 2000s comedy Dude, Where’s My Car, but has worked on such television classics as South Park and That 70’s Show. But now Stark works with the industry in a different way, helping people in entertainment deal with stress and depression, and even help others transition out of the industry just like him. His book Dude, Where’s My Car-tharsis is a friendly guide to talk therapy.

Today on AirTalk, we talk to Stark about his transition from screenwriter to therapist and discuss the overall mental health of workers in the entertainment industry. We also want to hear from you! If you work in the entertainment industry how are you taking care of your mental health during this difficult time? Have you sought therapy to deal with the stress of working in the entertainment industry? Share your experience with us at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com.

Ice cream galore! Previewing LAist’s upcoming ice cream social and trying the new flavor collaboration between McConnell’s and See’s Candies

Summer is here, and amid all this sweltering heat, it might come as a relief to hear that this Sunday…is National Ice Cream Day. This gives us the opportunity to not only eat some ice cream (although do you really need a reason) but also to promote our upcoming LAist Ice Cream Social, which is part of our Culinary Connections live events series. And as luck would have it, two heritage Southern California stewards of sweets -- McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams and See’s Candies -- have teamed up to create four limited time ice creams that combine McConnell’s most popular flavors with some of the candies for which See’s is best known.

Today on AirTalk, we’ll preview the Ice Cream Social with LAist associate editor of food and culture Gab Chabrán and Michael Palmer, CEO and co-owner of McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams.

Feature: Josh Margolin and June Squibb talk about the inspiration behind “Thelma”

Serving as an unconventional addition to the action-comedy genre, Josh Margolin’s “Thelma” is a unique film that uses our understanding of age to create a heightened sense of action for tasks that many people may consider mundane. The film follows June Squibb as the titular character, who seeks retribution after being scammed out of $10,000 by a phone scammer. Using Los Angeles’s beautiful scenery, the film sees Thelma searching for the person who wronged her, all the while freaking her family out as they search for an older relative. These common issues bring an uncommon story to the screen, so joining us to talk about it for this week’s FilmWeek feature is writer-director Josh Margolin and star June Squibb.

“Thelma” is in select theaters, and is out now on VOD.
