How is Biden Navigating Domestic Opinion On The Conflict In Israel?
It’s a challenging time for President Biden. As Israel’s conflict with Gaza intensifies, the President has to decide how to respond diplomatically while also navigating his own party’s conflicting views on the crisis. While his base is very pro-Israel, many in the left wing of his party sympathize with the Palestinians. How, if at all, can the president walk the line between these two factions while navigating the conflict in Israel? And how might domestic opinion influence foreign policy? Joining us to discuss is Domenico Montanaro, NPR's senior political editor/correspondent, who has been writing about the political conundrum in which the president finds himself.
Recapping The LA County District Attorney Debate
Nine candidates seeking to unseat L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón in the March 2024 primary election took the stage Wednesday night in a debate sponsored by the region’s biggest police unions.A spokesperson for Gascón said he would not attend because of a previously scheduled event at the same time with a Democratic club. The L.A. County DA’s race is expected to be closely watched across the country as a barometer of how the public is feeling about criminal justice reforms amid an increase in property crime. Property crime is up 17.4% in the city of L.A. so far this year compared to two years ago. Joining to help recap the debate is Frank Stoltze, civics and democracy correspondent for LAist.

Drop, Cover, And Hold On! The Great ShakeOut Comes ‘Round AgainDrop, Cover, And Hold On! The Great ShakeOut Comes ‘Round Again
Knowing about earthquake safety is crucial in Southern California, where the prospect of “The Big One” looms large. Every year, the Great ShakeOut conducts an earthquake preparedness drill, asking participants in “Official ShakeOut Regions” to duck and cover. This year, the drill will occur at 10:19 a.m. on 10/19. In preparation for this year’s Great ShakeOut, LAist science reporter Jacob Margolis visited an earthquake simulator (basically a trailer on springs that is powered by hydraulics) during an event in downtown L.A. run by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. And let me tell you,” he writes in his piece at LAist.com, “there’s a reason officials hammer the phrase, ‘Drop, cover, hold on.’”
Today on AirTalk, Jacob joins us to discuss earthquake safety, the Great ShakeOut and what it was like to experience an earthquake simulator.
