Welcome to Doo-Dah
The 6th Annual Doo-Dah Surf will start at the crack of dawn on Saturday. At Doo-Dah, surfers don silly costumes and hit the waves. Their goal: combat the aggro attitude that's taking over some surf spots.
In the Aloha spirit, Off-Ramp brings you a very delayed, live, remote from the last year's Doo-Dah. If you can't make it to the actual event, tune in.
Doo Dah Surf - Part One
John gives a blow-by-blow of the costume contest and we meet a surf folk artist and Surfing Santa.
Also, wanna know why surfers get aggro? Queena Kim asks Steven Kotner, the author of West of Jesus and he says the answer can be found in science.
The Duke of Surfing
Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968) won five Olympic gold medals for swimming and "became surfing's ambassador to the world."
Is that his caddy in the suit, or Dashiell Hammett? Photo circa 1925.
Doo Dah Surf - Part Two
Off-Ramp commentator Milton Love has some ontological questions for the creator of Sponge Bob Square Pants, and we find out what makes those ukulele plays strum.
Doo Dah Surf - Part Three
Find out why Charles Phoenix likes business suits, meet a butterfly surfer and get the inside scoop on the judges as they hang on the bluffs just south of Gladstone's restaurant.
Hang Tiki
Tiki Tony enjoys the best of both worlds.
Surf Break
Doo Dah surfers take a break before the surf breaks.
Time Capsule
These surfers at Surfrider Beach show that old habits die hard.
A Nest for the Homeless
Listen in with John as police and fire crews clean out a homeless camp that was suspended thirty feet above a downtown LA street. Someone managed to get a sofa up there, and lived with the exhaust and the pigeons for a couple years.
