  • Months before officials in the city Bell city were indicted for bilking millions in tax payer dollars, another city council faced similar accusations. Four-fifths of the San Jacinto city council is facing a range of corruption charges. All of the accused councilmen are still in office — but perhaps not for long.
  • Cal Poly Pomona has suspended a campus fraternity following alleged hazing incidents that may have involved the branding of some students. The action comes one year after another Cal Poly fraternity was expelled for similar practices.
  • You know Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Meg Whitman are running for governor. But you might not know any of the four minor party candidates... like the self-described “homeschooling mother, concerned citizen and independent businesswoman” who carries the American Independent Party banner. Her name is Chelene Nightingale. But she’s just as much American Independent as she is Tea Party.
  • Today’s the deadline to register to vote in next month’s election. If you’re a registered voter, you have one more week to mail in early ballots. Nearly half of Riverside County voters are expected to vote ahead of schedule.
  • There’s a lot of speculation over what impact the Tea Party movement may have on next month’s general election. There’s increased scrutiny of some candidates endorsed by the movement - and questions over where the Party gets some of its funding. Frequently missing from the debate are the self-financed activists and organizers flying below the radar; Tea Partiers shaking up politics in their own backyards.
  • The California Department of Corrections is making it easier for people to find prison inmates. It’s launched a free online search engine that enables users to find a prisoner’s location with a few simple keystrokes.
  • In Riverside this morning, Senator Barbara Boxer cast her ballot in the November general election — one month ahead of schedule. The veteran Democratic lawmaker needs all the votes she can get. With four weeks left to go until the election, polls show Boxer in the tightest race she’s faced since she ran for the Senate the first time 18 years ago
  • A 6,000-pound slab of the Berlin Wall has found a new home in the Inland Empire. The colorful, paint-gun splattered 3-ton section of wall is being installed at the newly established Ronald Reagan Park in San Bernardino.
  • A federal judge has cleared the way for California's first execution in almost five years - the first since California revised procedures for carrying out lethal injections. Albert Greenwood Brown of Riverside is set to be executed at San Quentin prison on Wednesday, for a murder committed 30 years ago.
  • Actor Tim Robbins is no stranger to prisons. He played an innocent man convicted of murder in “The Shawshank Redemption.” He was nominated for a Best Director Oscar for “Dead Man Walking” — a film about a death row inmate. Now Tim Robbins is behind bars again — but this time, with a theatre troupe leading one of the last arts rehabilitation programs in California prisons.
