  • Every now and then Elgin Baylor makes a good trade. It doesn't happen often. It happened during the 2000 NBA Draft when the Clippers underwent a dramatic makeover that brought them Corey Maggette, Darius Miles, Quentin Richardson, and others from the Orlando Magic. It also happened during the 2001 NBA Draft when they effectively dealt Tyson Chandler for Elton Brand. And it happened it again yesterday. The Clippers acquired Sam Cassell and a first...

  • The Angels blew their second straight winnable game today, losing 5-4 to the A's on a dumb mistake by Francisco Rodriguez. LAist cannot remember the last time a pitcher missed a routine throwback from a catcher, which caused a run to score. We certainly can't recall it ever happening to end a game. Theoretically the Angels should feel good about this series with the A's. They easily won the first game, and should have...

  • The NFL-LA saga continued this week, as Mayor Villaraigosa chose to score political points by stating the obvious. "We need a football team here," Villaraigosa told radio host Rikki Kleiman. "It's the entertainment capital of America, and we need a football team here. What I've said, though, is we're not spending public money for it. We're not going to subsidize the building of stadiums." Thanks Antonio for reminding the NFL owners how difficult it's...

  • The Dodgers added a little bit of power yesterday by trading for Jose Cruz Jr. Now before the Dodger nation blasts Paul DePodesta for doing too little, too late, we want to think about this rationally. Cruz does add some pop, which the Dodgers could use. He's a gold glover defensively. And this isn't meant to be an earth-shattering signing. This is simply meant to be a slight tweaking to a roster that could...

  • While the Angel Nation deals with the death of legendary manager Gene Mauch, the baseball world will be focused on the field as the two best teams in the AL West go head-to-head. Not long ago, the A's seemed dead and buried, but now Billy Beane looks like a genius again as Oakland has the hottest team in baseball. The Angels failure to hit has also allowed Oakland to get back into the AL...
