Last night's howling winds might have tipped you off: the Santa Ana winds are back. Don't say we didn't warn you (we did), but we wanted to give you an update on the winds that are making us a little crazy and knocking out our power. The National Weather Service sent out a fire weather message and a red flag warning this morning for the Southland that goes into effect this evening and ends on Saturday afternoon.

Because the city of Los Angeles is already in the red four months into this fiscal year, city workers could be facing layoffs on January 1. Those layoffs could hit the LAPD, Chief Charlie Beck wrote in a memo on the department's website.

The good news: reported hate crimes in Los Angeles County are at the second lowest that they've been in 22 years of counting. The bad news: they're still a problem and reported hate crimes ticked up 15 percent since last year.

Almost exactly a year ago Michael Nida was fatally shot by Downey Police on a trip to pick up a pack of cigarettes for his wife. Yesterday a report from the District Attorney's office concluded that police acted lawfully when they shot and killed Nida in what turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.
