A man passing over the 170 freeway yesterday pulled over when he noticed something awry: a teenage girl perched precariously on the ledge of the overpass. Jay Schaefer, a 42-year-old plumber and the father of four daughters, flipped a U-turn, pulled over and started talking to her.

It sounds scary: a lightning struck a plane just as it was about to land at LAX this morning. But the phenomenon is pretty common and on average every airliner will be struck by lightning once a year. In this case, the Delta Airlines flight from Narita, Japan landed at 8:10 am just as it was hit by lightning.

Last night The Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief played to an apparently sold-out house at The Belasco Theatre downtown, but angry ticketholders said they were told to cough up an extra $20 if they wanted to pick up their tickets—in effect, doubling the ticket price.

The California DMV is taking orders for license plates modeled on the ones the agency issued back in the day: yellow from the 1950s, black from the 1960s and blue from the 1970s. If you're interested, you can fill out a pre-application form on the agency's website for "legacy plates."
