Dr. Conrad Murray said "Your, honor, I am an innocent man..." and plead not guilty today to involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of Michael Jackson, according to LA Now. After entering his plea, Murray, whose medical license has been suspended, invoked his right to a speedy trial. Judge Michael Pastor commented on how rare it is for a defendant to push for a quick trial but honored the request and set jury selection for March 28.

The Los Angeles City Council is considering a plan to cut many critical city services down to a "four days a week" program in an attempt to deal with the $40 million budget deficit, according to the Daily News. While many plans have been carefully weighed over the past few months to sort out L.A.'s budget crisis, this plan cuts the deepest and would have the most significant impact on the daily lives of Angelenos.

In the wake of several high profile shootings and school lockdowns, City Council President Eric Garcetti submitted a motion today to ban "open carry" handguns within the city limits, according to LA Now. Garcetti is calling the move "common sense" and urges council members to approve it. "No one needs a gun on their hip when walking down the street or going to the store," Garcetti said. "The open carry of a handgun can be intimidating and threaten public safety."

Kobe Bryant will be the first athlete (ever, ever, ever!) to have his hand and foot imprinted in cement outside Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, according to KTLA. The ceremony for Bryant's cementing will take place on February 19th just one day before the All-Star game at Staples Center and amid a flurry of All-Star weekend festivities.

Judson Birza, winner of "Survivor: Nicaragua," was arrested yesterday. Birza was riding his skateboard in the middle of the street in Santa Monica when police detained him for a vehicle code violation. The police database showed he had a warrant out for his arrest and a prior DUI "incident." Customs inspectors have found larvae of the khapra beetle in a shipment of rice from Pakistan, according to CBS. The larvae-riddled finding was made on January 13th and has just been established as a pest that did not originate in the United States. As of yesterday, hospitals that participate in Medicare and Medicaid must allow all patients to decide upon visitation rights and who to entrust with making medical decisions on their behalf regardless of sexual orientation or identity, according to The Huffington Post. Brian Bond, White House deputy director of public engagement, said that "This policy impacts millions of LGBT Americans and their families. The President saw an injustice and felt very strongly about correcting this and has spoken about it often over the years."

More details have emerged in the case of the coke warehouse in Valencia. The two Canadians that were arrested for stashing 100 pounds of cocaine and $2.4 million in a Valencia warehouse were tracked from LAX to NoHo by police, according to CBS Los Angeles. A task force made up of Santa Monica officers and federal law enforcement investigators raided the warehouse on January 12th and seized the cash and the coke after tracking suspects from the airport to the location of the stash.
