Today's Sunset Strip entry below reminds this LAist of a Rodger Jacobs piece, "Wrestling with Mariel Hemingway." "I didn't tell Steve about the dreams until we were well into our second year of marriage. At first he laughed it off as a silly recurring dream but when he realized the serious intensity of the nocturnal wanderings of my mind he opted for some rather unique therapy. This was back in the day when the...

The Pasadena Star News reported on 11/4/04 that the MTA has commissioned a study to determine the feasibility of extending the 710 Long Beach/Pasadena using a tunnel under Pasadena, South Pasadena and El Sereno, the cities in the freeway's path. Proposals include building one tunnel for northbound cars, one for southbound cars, and a third for trucks. "It'll be too damned expensive to dig three holes. That's what (the study) is going to show...

LAist has been following the story of the Compton pre-teens killed on a joyride organized at a slumber party. The Los Angeles Times reports that investigators are trying to determine how "the driver -- a pajama-clad 13-year-old girl -- was able to get her mother's car keys, and whether she had taken the four-door white Mazda on previous joyrides, as several friends reported. The collision occurred about 6:20 p.m. Saturday after several youths had...

Tired of politics? You'd better get your second wind because local politicos descended on City Hall Monday to file the paperwork for the city wide election on March 8th. Should be a noisy fight as 26 incumbents and challengers launch campaigns for Los Angeles mayor, eight City Council seats and a handful of other offices. The Los Angeles Daily Breeze reported "the crowd of [mayoral] hopefuls included Mayor James Hahn and one of his...

We're not surprised to learn in today's Los Angeles Times that the first-ever Cosmetic Enhancement Expo was held last weekend at the L.A. Convention Center. According to market research obtained by GPS, Inc, the company staging the Expo, Los Angeles is the city where more cosmetic procedures are performed than anywhere else in the United States. Times staffer Gina Piccalo writes, "About 7,000 (mostly) women from all over Southern California -- many of them...

The Los Angeles Daily News reports today that the City of Los Angeles's "Housing Authority "inappropriately" shifted $30 million to a nonprofit agency last year to avoid paying the cost of issuing excess rental vouchers, a new federal audit says. The Los Angeles agency transferred the $30 million from its reserve accounts, then told the federal government it didn't have the money to cover the cost of as many as 1,500 vouchers issued to...

LAist often scans Gayot.com for LA restaurant news. We found the following item after sifting through all the (barely) rewritten press releases: Alto Palato, the landmark Italian restaurant on La Cienega, is closing its doors on December 3 after more than 10 years in business. Owner Danilo Terribili is sad about the departure, but it will give him more time to spend on his Spark Woodfire Cooking restaurants. From November 7 until then, chef...

The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that an "87-year-old man must stand trial for killing 10 people as he drove his car through the Santa Monica Farmers' Market last year, a judge ruled Wednesday. George Russell Weller's attorneys argued unsuccessfully that the elderly driver accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake and then went into a "panic" mode that prevented him from being able to stop. But Deputy Dist. Atty. Ann Ambrose...
