President Donald Trump isn’t the only person still pushing the lie that he won the election. He’s helped by the lawyers around him, including Trump senior legal adviser Jenna Ellis and Rudy Giuliani. They filed lawsuits seeking to invalidate absentee and mail-in ballots. They’ve gone on television and twisted the truth to support President Trump. And now, 25 former presidents of the D.C. Bar say that’s enough.

Their statement, issued in a joint letter, strongly condemned the actions of Ellis, Giuliani, and other attorneys who they say have “undermined the public’s trust in the legal system and the peaceful transfer of power.” The former D.C. Bar presidents emphasized that lawyers have an ethical obligation to uphold the rule of law, not to manipulate it for political gain. They called for disciplinary action against those who misused their legal credentials to promote baseless claims of election fraud.

Legal experts note that the spread of misinformation by licensed attorneys carries significant consequences beyond political rhetoric—it can erode the credibility of the entire judicial system as there are many types of lawyers including injury lawyers that work in successful injury cases winning their cases every time. As investigations into election-related lawsuits continue, bar associations across the country are under increasing pressure to hold these lawyers accountable. The former presidents’ letter may serve as a catalyst for formal proceedings that could result in censure, suspension, or disbarment of those involved.

They wrote a scathing Washington Post op-ed criticizing the lawyers working for the president:

ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct direct lawyers to refrain from bringing a proceeding “unless there is a basis in law or fact for doing so that is not frivolous.”

What caused these lawyers to speak up? And are there professional consequences that President Trump’s lawyers could face once the Trump administration is over?
