West Nile Virus Claims Life of Second L.A. County Resident

An elderly person has become the second Los Angeles County Resident to die due to West Nile Virus, according to health officials. Identifying information, including gender, has not been released.
The latest victim, just as the first, was in his or her 80s and resided in the southeastern part of the county, reports City News Service.
The Department of Public Health cautions people over 50 years old, or who have weakened immune systems are more susceptible to the disease. To date, 54 human cases of West Nile virus illness have been reported in L.A. County.
Dead birds, squirrels, and mosquitos pass the disease to humans, the latter of which are drawn to stagnant pools, puddles, or bodies of water, particularly at dusk.
