Video: Bear Takes The Day Off, Goes For A Dip In A Backyard Pool

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

An Arcadia resident spotted a bear lounging in a backyard pool Thursday morning. Some of the incident was captured in a video, which was then shared by the Arcadia Police Department.

In the video, the bear does a few strokes, takes a momentary break at the steps, then turns around for another lap. Talk about leisurely. There's also a basketball rim by the edge of the pool, though we haven't confirmed if the bear had also shot some hoops during his day off.

Lieutenant Tom Cullen of the Arcadia Police Department told LAist that the video had been submitted anonymously today to the department. He added that officers had not received a call about a bear—hopefully that means it had wandered back into the wilderness on its own accord.

The bear had good reason to take time to cool off, too: Arcadia topped off at 99 degrees today, and is expected to hit 100 tomorrow. Last week we reported that the nefarious "heat dome" phenomena was going to last till July 27, but it seems like the heat wave has decided to stick around a bit longer.

As noted by the Arcadia Police Department on their blog: "Bears are no strangers to the foothill neighborhoods and the likelihood of bears coming into yards, pools, and trashcans is increased during the warmer months." They also said, "DO NOT FEED the bears."

This wasn't the only recent incident in which a bear had taken a moment to chillax in a Southland pool. Last month a bear was spotted taking a dip at a La Cañada Flintridge residence.

To all you bears out there: we salute you, and may you keep reminding us humans that kickin' back is a thing of virtue.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
