Videos: Massive Fire Breaks Out On Hotel Pool Deck In Las Vegas

A massive fire broke out on the pool deck of a hotel on the Vegas Strip, sending a massive plume of black smoke into the air and temporarily shutting down the famed street.Around 12:15 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, The Cosmopolitan hotel's Bamboo Pool deck erupted into flames, setting poolside cabanas and palm trees on fire on the 14th floor deck. Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell told Las Vegas Now that it took firefighters about a half hour to control the blaze and eventually put it out. There was little damage to the hotel itself.
One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and a portion of Las Vegas Boulevard (a.k.a. The Strip) was temporarily closed while firefighters battled the blaze. A witness told the Las Vegas Sun that employees think it was started by a cigarette—either by the pool or tossed down by a guest from a floor above.
The Cosmopolitan released the following statement:
At this time we can confirm that the fire at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas at Bamboo Pool at the West End tower has been contained and put out. The fire started at approximately 12:15 p.m. PDT. There were no serious injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Guests were alerted to the situation by our team of safety professionals and our comprehensive emergency responsive program, and proper evacuation procedures were used. At The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas the safety and security of our guests and CoStars is our first priority.
