How to learn more about Caltrans’ estimated $72 million Pacific Coast Highway project

Three rows of white car tires are lined up around a white and black sign that reads "FIX PCH." A group of people are standing on the other side of the tires. The sky is overcast with bits of blue poking out between clouds.
The Ghost Tire Memorial, seen in 2024, was installed along Pacific Coast Highway in 2023 and marked 58 traffic deaths since 2010.

Caltrans is hosting an informational meeting this week about a rehabilitation project for parts of Pacific Coast Highway — and the public is invited.

The estimated $72 million project would span from McClure Tunnel in Santa Monica to just south of Cross Creek Road in Malibu.

The goal is to restore the pavement along the popular scenic stretch while improving safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. It would include new sidewalks near several bus stops, better lighting and additional bike lanes, among other upgrades.

PCH has seen years of deadly crashes and is considered a top-priority safety corridor for Caltrans. After four Pepperdine University students were hit and killed by a speeding driver in October 2023, Malibu declared a local emergency and has taken several steps to deter dangerous driving.

Parts of PCH were also damaged during the Palisades Fire, and access remains limited.

The work is expected to begin in summer 2027 and be completed by summer 2029.
