A transgender woman was shot and killed Thursday morning in East Hollywood in what police believe may have been an attempted robbery. The victim, described as African-American and in her 40s, was shot in the head in the 600 block of North Kenmore Avenue around 2:30 a.m., KTLA reports. She was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead around 5:30 a.m.

Witnesses reported seeing two or three Hispanic men running from the scene of the shooting, but no other details were available. LAPD officers say they do not believe she was the victim of a hate crime but rather a robbery.

LAPD Lt. Joe Losorelli said, "During the robbery, there was a struggle and there were shots fired, and the victim was struck one time. It appears they were struck in the head," according to ABC.

Police are looking at surveillance footage and talking to witnesses, but anyone with information should called the LAPD's Rampart Division (213) 484-3400.
