Traffic Nightmare: Coldwater Canyon Will Be Closed For A Month

Angelenos, prepare yourselves: Coldwater Canyon is going to be closed during major driving hours for about a month starting near the end of March.

The closure begins March 23, and is expected to last until around April 26. Coldwater Canyon will be closed from Ventura Boulevard to Mulholland Drive, from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.

When work is not being done during the overnight hours and on Sundays, there will be one lane open in each direction.

Those needing to get from the Valley to "over the hill" destinations will have to make their crossings over on Laurel Canyon, Beverly Glen, or even (gasp!) the 405 Freeway. Don't worry--the Coldwater "Canyongeddon" is not going to overlap with any major closures over on the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass.

Now, who do you have to shake your fist at and curse when you get stuck in the Coldwater Closure traffic? It's the L.A. Department of Water and Power. The LADWP explains the reason for this big time shutdown:

This project is part of a major improvement project to upgrade the city’s water infrastructure. Due to the narrow road conditions of Coldwater Canyon Avenue and the need to use heavy equipment to excavate the road, remove and replace pipe, the thoroughfare must be completely closed to traffic to ensure the safety of the crew and the public.
