The L.A. Times made a big step toward boosting its bottom line without laying anybody off today. In fact, Los Angeles Times Media Group announced a significant hire, naming Emily Smith its first ever Senior Vice President of Digital.

Smith, previously a vice president and general manager at Disney Interactive Media Group, is tasked with shoring up all Times Media Group properties for the digital age and maximizing returns on an online readership that currently tops 8 million monthly uniques, according to the press release. The Envelope, Brand X, Hoy Los Angeles, and the Times itself are among the properties under the media group umbrella.
