Who knew? May Day is much more than immigration. In addition to being Buy Indie Day, it's about guerilla gardening, too. Specifically, it's International Sunflower Guerrilla Gardening Day.

That means that the good clandestine folks at Los Angeles Guerilla Gardening are participating and encouraging others to do the same. At this moment, it's too late to order a delivery of seeds from the group, but that shouldn't stop you from doing it anyway--everyday can be guerilla gardening.

If you want to get your own seeds, the best way to go is with native ones. But there's one problem: they are hard to come by, oddly enough. "Most big box stores don't have what's appropriate for the climate," explained LA Guerrilla Gardening operative Mr. Stamen over the phone. He suggests you head to the Theordore Payne Foundation--the group behind the California Wildflower Hotline--for some native seeds (about $4 a packet).

Another challenge is time of year. This is an international event, but for Southern California, this is not the best time to be planting. Mr. Stamen says a little more watering than usual will be needed.

About 50 sites will be planted tonight around Los Angeles (here's a map). LAist might be doing one, but you never know.... this is guerrilla! (thanks, GreenLAGirl)

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
