A statue of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s detective Jeremiah MacKay, killed in the line of duty by ex-Los Angeles Police Department cop Christopher Dorner, was unveiled today in Lake Arrowhead. The broze sculpture of MacKay holding his hand over his heart was created by Khachik Khachatouryan, and was the result of a grassroots fundraising effort to put the memorial up.

MacKay was felled Febraury 12, 2013 by gunfire exchanged between law enforcement and then-fugitive ex-cop Dorner in Big Bear. Ultimately, Dorner took his own life inside a mountain cabin burning to the ground and surrounded by authorities.

Today's unveiling ceremony was expected to be attended by MacKay's wife and child, according to CBS2.
