Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

There have been rumblings about impeaching President Donald Trump ever since a group of Democratic leaders, including civil rights icon John Lewis, sat out his inauguration back in January. The impeachment conversation has remained mostly theoretical thus far, but San Fernando Valley Congressman Brad Sherman is doing his best to make it a reality.

Sherman, a Democrat who has served in Congress for 20 years, worked with Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) to circulate an Article of Impeachment to all members of the House on Monday, the LA Times reports. The document seeks to impeach Trump for alleged "high crimes and misdemeanors," citing Trump associates' possible collusion with the Russian government and taking Trump himself to task for "threatening, and then terminating, FBI Director James Comey." Sherman denied any partisan motives in a statement on Monday, noting that Trump's impeachment would transfer power to Vice President Mike Pence, with whom he still disagrees. Still, Sherman reached out to his Democratic and Republican colleagues in the House for support in impeaching Trump, saying ,"The evidence we have is sufficient to move forward now. And the national interest requires that we do so.”

Sherman, a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs committee, is realistic about his chances, saying on Monday, "I have no illusions. Articles of Impeachment will not pass the House in the near future. But given the risk posed to the Republic, we should move things forward as quickly as possible." Sherman told LAist that the letter's main intent is to get people talking about Section 1512(b)(3), the law against witness tampering that Trump is accused of breaking. To recap, politicians are now serving Articles of Impeachment and invoking the safety of the Republic; we are officially in Scandal territory, guys. Hold on for dear life.
