A new SCOTUS session begins today

The Supreme Court is back in session this week, beginning a new term in which they’ll hear a number of cases whose outcome will have far reaching effects across the country. Today on AirTalk, we look at some of the most noteworthy cases.

Guests:

  • Josh Blackman, professor and Centennial Chair of Constitutional Law at South Texas College of Law, Houston
  • Vikram Amar, distinguished professor of law at UC Davis

Prop 45: Changing the environmental review process

Proposition 45 would limit reviews under the California Environmental Quality Act, in an effort to help developers finish "essential" projects such as housing, schools, roads and bridges more quickly. The proposition would create a 365-day limit review process on such projects and would require courts to rule within 270 days on any lawsuits related to the environmental review law. We talk through the arguments.

Guests:

  • John Myers, senior vice president of communications & external affairs for California Chamber of Commerce (CalChamber), which leads the coalition in support of Prop. 45
  • Asha Sharma, deputy director of Sierra Club California

Triple Play: Braves tie the series in Game 2 of the NLDS

The Atlanta Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Sunday night to even the National League Division Series at a game apiece. Runs were hard to come by after the teams combined for five homers in the Dodgers’ 5-3 victory in Game 1. We get into where things stand.

Guests:

  • A Martinez, host of NPR’s Morning Edition
  • Molly Knight, sportswriter and author of the The Long Game baseball newsletter

SoCal History: Auto manufacturing

Detroit was known as the dominating state for automobile manufacturing, so much so it earned the nickname “Motor City.” But did you know Southern California had its own rich history in the industry?

Guest:

  • Leslie Mark Kendall, chief historian of the Petersen Automotive Museum and author of Defying Detroit: Automobile Manufacturing in Southern California
