Soon You Can See Movies On A Theater Rooftop
In Los Angeles, we've been blessed with having so many outdoor movie screenings that sometimes we feel overwhelmed by the options. However, there's something different coming to our city that might make it easier to narrow down your choices: screenings on the rooftop of an old Hollywood theater.
Rooftop Film Club, which got its start with screenings in London and New York, is making its way to Los Angeles. From August 26 to September 19, you can watch classic flicks from the likes of The Goonies to Ghostbusters and Top Gun on top of the 89-year-old The Montalbán theater near Hollywood and Vine.
What makes these screenings different is that Rooftop Film Club provides comfy seats and wireless headphones so you can watch your favorite movies in peace without having to deal with the jabbering folk next to you. They even offer free blankets for you to stay warm if it gets a bit chilly at night. They also have a concession stand where you can buy drinks and snacks like popcorn and sweets. If you dress up in costumes that go along with the movies, you can even snag a free treat from the box office. You won't be able to bring in your own grub, though—this is not Cinespia.
The tickets are about $17. Doors open at 6 p.m., where you can grab food and drink then, and the movies start at 8 p.m. You can buy tickets here.
Here's the schedule:
Wednesday, August 26: The Big Lebowski
Thursday, August 27: Clueless
Friday, August 28: Blade Runner
Tuesday, September 1: Casablanca
Wednesday, September 2: The Breakfast Club
Thursday, September 3: Cinema Paradiso
Saturday, September 5: Back to the Future
Tuesday, September 8: Breakfast at Tiffany's
Wednesday, September 9: Ghostbusters
Thursday, September 10: Jaws
Friday, September 11: The Goonies
Saturday, September 12: Top Gun
Tuesday, September 15: Dirty Dancing
Wednesday, September 16: Reservoir Dogs
Thursday, September 17: Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Saturday, September 19: Grease
The Montalbán is located at 1615 Vine St., Hollywood
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
