The health impacts of the Lineage fire and what recourse residents have
The topic:
A report out of St. John’s Community Health details the conditions residents in Boyle Heights suffered after the Lineage warehouse fire and subsequent weeks of rotting food.
The findings: In the aftermath of the Lineage fire, St. John's Community Health deployed three mobile clinics to the area to treat residents. More than 35% of patients treated met the criteria for toxic exposure and smoke inhalation which include upper respiratory infections, eye conjunctivitis and a persistent cough.

Guests:
- Jim Mangia, president and CEO of St. John’s Community Health, which released a report on the health effects they saw in area residents treated at their mobile clinics
- Gregory Keating, professor of law at USC's Gould School and an expert on torts, professional responsibility and legal theory
What was your big take away from the humanities?
The topic:
The number of students who used AI for homework jumped from 48% to 62% last year according to RAND. But while AI can do your homework, it can’t learn for you. Today on AirTalk, we’re doing a bit of an ode to the humanities and the benefits they confer on us.
Humanities are hard: But so is everything worth doing. Reading, comprehending and writing are all skills you have to develop over time with practice. ChatGPT can’t really teach you how to be a critical thinker, but a humanities class can.
Join the conversation: What did you take away from the humanities that has stuck with you? Maybe it was a book, or an idea, or a piece of cultural history. However the humanities have impacted you, call in and tell us how at (866) 893-5722 or you can email us at atcomments@laist.com.
Guest:
- Sarah Mesle, professor of writing at USC and author of Reasons and Feelings: Writing for the Humanities Now
Taqueria Tijuanero brings Northern Mexican food across the border to LA
The topic:
Taqueria Tijuanero — a Tijuana, Mexico, taco chain — has made it a lot easier in recent years for Californians to try their food, with a location in San Diego and also East L.A. Similar to other norteño spots, you’ll find tacos, vampiros and burritos. Today on AirTalk, we’ll talk to one of the family members behind the popular taco chain about their story.
Restaurant details:
- The Esquivel family opened their first brick-and-mortar at Playas de Tijuana in 2011.
- The family has been in the process of opening its third SoCal location, which will be in Echo Park.
- Tijuanazo will be one of multiple vendors involved in Taqueando After Dark, an event that’ll have multiple Northern Mexico vendors/restaurants, happening in DTLA on Aug. 27 and 28 — read more on LAist.
