Trouble in L.A. — The Lakers ownership battle and the Clippers-Kawhi saga
The topic:
Recent reporting from The Wall Street Journal digs into questions surrounding Mark Walter’s finances. Walter acquired L.A.’s most premier sports franchises, including the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012 and the Lakers just last year. Federal agents have been investigating Walter’s sports empire, primarily focusing on intermediaries between insurance companies and businesses, both of which Walter owned. Today on AirTalk, we talk about the latest on this and other sports news that’s rocking L.A.
Buss family issues surrounding Lakers sale: The once longstanding owners of the Lakers, the Buss family, may be selling all of their stake in the team. The siblings, who once held a majority stake in the team, sought to sell their remaining minority stake, but sibling Jeanie Buss has legally contested the decision.
Clippers vs. NBA: Over in Inglewood, L.A. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is dealing with a salary cap circumvention investigation of star player Kawhi Leonard after Leonard was able to capture additional income through different team sponsors. Despite ESPN’s latest reporting that no evidence links Ballmer with Leonard’s ability to increase his income, the NBA has stated that it will continue with its investigation into the Clippers owner.

Prediction markets and elections — will it impact voter confidence?
The topic:
This year’s Los Angeles mayoral primary election might serve as a key example of how prediction markets can impact voter perceptions. Based on prediction markets having Spencer Pratt in the top two running for quite some time, many questioned the legitimacy of him losing out. Could this be a sign prediction markets are impacting voter trust?
Election denial: In the case of Pratt’s loss, both Elon Musk and President Donald Trump contributed to questioning of the results — claims were then debunked by the Department of Justice.
Wisconsin v. Kalshi: Kalshi had pursued legal action against the state of Wisconsin for what it viewed as "voter suppression" — because the state doesn’t allow voters to wager on prediction markets, citing a 1849 law that prohibited betting on elections where you vote. So what is the legal standing for prediction markets and politics?

How do Jewish people consider their identity?
The topic:
California lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow Jewish people to identify as an ethnic group for state data collection. But this proposal raises a bigger question about Jewish identity: What does it mean to be Jewish beyond religion? Today, we’ll talk about the many ways people understand Jewish identity and why certain distinctions can matter when we talk about who ‘counts’ as a Jewish person.
