Remembering filmmaker Rob Reiner

Listen 25:38

Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead Sunday at their home in Brentwood. LAPD officials said they are investigating “an apparent homicide” at the residence, but declined to give additional details. Authorities said early Monday they expect to release more information shortly. Overnight, L.A. County jail records now show the felony arrest of Nick Reiner, 32, the couple's son, who was arrested last night and booked into custody at 5:04 a.m. He is being held in lieu of $4 million bail. No initial court appearance was listed. The deaths of his parents were confirmed in a statement released by the family to the media — and in social media posts by L.A. Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday evening. The family statement said: "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time." Today on AirTalk, we remember the life and legacy of Rob Reiner with Lael Loewenstein, film critic for LAist. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass also calls in to share her condolences.

As the SAVE plan comes to an end, we check in on student loans

Listen 11:09

Last week, the Department of Education settled its legal battle with the state of Missouri over a student loan repayment option the state took issue with. The settlement would officially end the Biden Administration’s ‘Saving on a Valuable Education’ (SAVE) Plan. The plan gave the opportunity to millions of Americans to have monthly payment plans that were much more favorable to borrowers than other prior offers, although its original promise of student loan forgiveness has been left in legal limbo since the plan was first enacted in 2023. Joining us to give us the latest on what’s next for SAVE enrollees is Ayelet Sheffey, senior education reporter for Business Insider, and Dalié Jiménez, professor of law and director of the Student Loan Law Initiative at UC Irvine.

In the wake of the Australia Beach shooting, we hear from Jewish AirTalk listeners

Listen 13:16

Two gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, killing 15 people, including a child, which follows a wave of antisemitic attacks in Australia over the past year. It was the deadliest shooting in almost three decades in a country with strict gun control laws. Joining us to dig into the news is Jason Moss, Executive Director at the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, and Kristine Henriksen Garroway, professor of the Hebrew Bible at Hebrew Union College. We also want to hear from you. As we head into the second night of Hanukkah, how are you celebrating this year? How are you thinking of Hanukkah, given the news out of Bondi Beach? Tell us about it by calling 866-893-5722, or you can email us at atcomments@laist.com.

Full-body MRIs are trending. Has our health obsession gone too far?

Listen 29:38

Kim Kardashian recently advertised a new health hack she tried and was now touting — the full-body MRI. She called the $2,500 scan “life changing.” The company that offered the scan, Prenuvo, is the largest whole-body MRI company and is based in Bethesda, Maryland. The powerful imaging offering allows the healthy conscious – and wealthy – to detect anything that might otherwise go unnoticed. A tumor, a cyst – the MRI will detect it. But to what end? How useful is it to know all the benign bumps and lumps in your body? For some, like Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank who wrote about this recently, it’s priceless knowledge. He joins us today to share his journey with the whole-body MRI alongside Andrew Lacy, CEO and Founder of Prenuvo and Dr. Dushyant Sahani, Professor and Chair of Radiology at the University of Washington.
