Purple Line Work Will Close Wilshire For 22 Weekends This Summer
Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile will be closed for 22 weekends this summer as Metro continues work on the Purple Line extension. On Monday, Metro officials ultimately decided to go with the weekend-only closures instead of closing the thoroughfare for seven straight weeks. The closures will allow crews to install a concrete deck on Wilshire Boulevard from S. Detroit Street to S. Orange Drive—allowing cars to drive over while work on the new La Brea Metro station continues below. According to the Los Feliz Ledger, the work is expected to begin in June.
"Our goal is to build this project on-time, on-budget and with minimal disruption in a safe and efficient manner," said Metro Board Chair Mark Ridley-Thomas in a statement. The Purple Line is planned to eventually reach Westwood.
Metro went with the 22-weekend plan after input from residents in the Miracle Mile. "You can't tie up Wilshire Boulevard for the amount of time that would be necessary to build a station. That's just not feasible," Metro spokesman Dave Sotero told KPCC. "So the next best thing is to put this temporary decking in place so that cars can continue to go back and forth on the street and we're able to work and build the station underground."
No dates have been set yet, but Metro says they will announce detours ahead of time. The closures will be in three phases:
- Phase 1: Wilshire Boulevard will be closed between S. Detroit Street and La Brea Avenue for three weekends.
- Phase 2: The intersection of Wilshire Boulevard will be closed at La Brea Avenue for three weekends.
- Phase 3: Wilshire Boulevard will be closed from La Brea Avenue to Highland Avenue for sixteen weekends.
Yup, sixteen weekends.
