The shooting happened around 7:30 am this morning in the 1800 block of Whitley Avenue which is between Hollywood Boulevard and Franklin Avenue, according to City News Service. LAPD responded to the scene initially when they got a call that an intruder armed with a knife was inside a ground-floor apartment, according to KTLA. The Los Angeles Times reports the man was hospitalized, but it's not clear where he was shot or what his status was. No police officers were injured in the incident, but there were few other details.

Police say that the initial call reported a domestic violence incident. A woman in the apartment lobby directed police to the suspect, and the shooting happened a short time later. Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene. The man's identity has not yet been released. It's not clear—despite what earlier reports said—whether the man was armed.
