Get a DUI, Get Shamed by the Internet

The idea is nothing new, but something not applied to the internet so aggressively by a local government agency (or as far as we know). Some newspapers with crime blotter information list DUI arrests, so why not go further and start publishing that online yourself? That's what Huntington Beach Police wants to do, according to The Independent. Since the city's local newspaper stopped publishing names last December -- for editorial reasons, they say -- police have proposed listing them on the city's website, plus the location of their last drink. "We have a murder once every couple of years in Huntington Beach, but we have a dozen or so people killed in alcohol-related crashes every year," a police official said. The information is a public record.
