This photo of Britney Spears has nothing to do with tonight's incident, but is still ridiculously funny

CBS 2 11 O'Clock News Live is reporting that six LAPD units, one ambulance and a fire engine were dispatched to Britney Spears' Mulholland Drive home at 8:00 p.m. tonight over Spears and Kevin Federline's ongoing custody battle (earlier today, we reported that Spears' lawyers gave up on her).

We've learned Spears has refused to turn her two sons back over to their daddy tonight, as ordered by the court. LAPD tells us they've been called to the home to deal with the family custody dispute. [TMZ]

After reviewing court documents, the children were handed over to Fedderline at 10:50 p.m. The ambulance was sent because Spears was said to be under the influence of an unknown substance. Elizabeth Snead at the LA Times blog, The Dish Rag, rightly calls this "the rapid decline of Britney Spears..." And as one reader noted earlier today, "the melt down of Britney is absolutely so fascinating but yet so sad."

*Update, 12:03 a.m.: TMZ is reporting Britney has left the house... on a gurney. "We're told Britney is being taken to a local hospital on a "medical hold" -- essentially a mental evaluation."

*Update, 12:30 a.m.: LA Times say the leaving of the house is Spears being detained. "While officers were at the home, Lee said they found Spears under the influence of an unknown substance and took her into custody to determine the substance."
