Photos: Bicyclists Check Out Silver Lake's Newest Bike Lane
Brand new bike lanes in Silver Lake were christened by the wheels of riders young and old(er) this morning, headed up by L.A. City Councilman Tom LaBonge.
The new bike lanes on Rowena were in the works for just under a year, and cap off a project to make Rowena not only safer but also more efficient. Speeding up the process was the April 2012 death of a pedestrian crossing Rowena Avenue near West Silver Lake Drive.
The Eastsider L.A. explains what's been going on along Rowena:
After a new water line project was completed, Rowena was re-striped to add bike lanes and remove two lanes of traffic as part of a “road diet,” which is intended to reduce speeding traffic and create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
At this morning's press conference, LaBonge called the bike lanes "a key element of Mayor Villaraigosa’s and the city council’s plan to make the city more bike-friendly where appropriate,” reports CBS2.
Over the next 90 days the lanes will be studied to see if any adjustments need to be made.
