Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

The LAist Pets of the Week, Cody and Penelope, are from Santé D'Or Foundation. Santé D'Or is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 2003. It is a donor-supported, no-kill animal rescue that provides holistic care and sanctuary to animals, while working to secure them permanent homes.

The organization is an educational resource in the neighborhood by offering rescue and adoption services; boarding and fostering; spay/neuter advocacy; behavior and nutrition counseling; and community outreach. They are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers, and donations of all shapes and sizes.

Sweet nine week old baby Cody has a lot of personality. He is one of a litter of five, but will leave his siblings to meet new people and it won't be long before he is curled up in a friendly lap. Cody has such a good time playing, he'll just fall asleep on his feet when he's tuckered out. One minute he's gazing at you, then he winks a few times and THUNK! Out like a light. He is a growing boy and loves meal time and shrieks with glee when you fill his bowl.

Penelope is a seven year old Beagle who was recently rescued from a local shelter just in the nick of time. She is a gentle soul who like many pets in shelters, was an unfortunate victim of circumstance, turned in by her human companion who had to move into a nursing home. Penelope is on a diet to shed a few pounds (who isn't?) but is healthy, happy and sweet girl looking for a new home. She would be an excellent addition to any household and even gets along well with other dogs and cats!

Contact Santé D'Or if you'd like to meet Penelope or Cody or stop by today's Feline and Fashion Shopping Day. Stop, shop, have a refreshing beverage and meet some fabulous felines from Santé D'Or. Native Boutique is located at 5915 Franklin Ave. in Franklin Village.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
