Paramount Library welcomes back readers after a year-long closure

In the inner corner of a bookshelf, a colorful carpet with cartoon animals and kids under round and square lights. There are balloons around the room. A female-presenting person stands to the left of the shelf and more people's heads peek out from behind the shelf.
The Paramount Library reopened July 17 after completing a $4.8 million renovation.

Topline:

You can now cozy up with a book at L.A. County’s Paramount Library. It reopened Wednesday after undergoing a year-long renovation.

What to expect? The Paramount Library was windowless before the renovation project, but now the building features skylights and natural light, as well as indoor plants and a living wall.

“For a long time, the Paramount Library was in serious need of some updates — this facility didn't even have a single window,”  L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn tweeted on Wednesday.

New seating areas, a homework center for kids, and separate reading spaces were also added.

The renovations further expanded the community room and added two new study rooms, along with self-checkout machines and new computers with WIFI access to better align with disability guidelines.

How it happened: Construction for the $4.8 million initiative began in February 2023.

It was brought forward by Paramount Vice Mayor Peggy Lemons and the L.A. County Public Works.

“I’ve always said that libraries are some of the most important places in any community. They’re spaces for learning, for arts and culture, and so much more. And most importantly, they’re for everyone. The Paramount library is overdue for an update,” Hahn said in 2022 when the renovations were announced.
