ROBERT SIEGEL, host:
Here is one more bit of news from the auto industry. Today, Volkswagen announced plans to open a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The company says it will create 2,000 jobs.
Volkswagen, from Germany, hasn't made cars in the U.S. since 1988, when it closed a plant in Pittsburg.
MICHELE NORRIS, host:
So why is Volkswagen coming back to the United States? One reason is the weak dollar. As the euro leaves the dollar in the dust, exporting goods to the U.S. gets more expensive. Volkswagen has only a 2 percent share of the American auto market. The company wants to triple that by 2018. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
