Rocky Mountain Arsenal
NPR's David Baron reports on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, located outside Denver. In World War Two, it was used by the army to make chemical weapons; after the war, the Shell oil company leased factories there to make pesticides and the government produced rocket fuel for the Apollo space program. One part of the arsenal was once called "the most contaminated square mile on earth." But it's become a de facto refuge for deer, rabbits, eagles, and other wildlife-a design ation that will become official when the cleanup of the area is complete. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal is already being managed as a park by the Fish and Wildlife Service.
