Mike Nifong, the Durham, N.C., district attorney in the case of three Duke University lacrosse players accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a party, is asking to be dropped from the case, and replaced with a special prosecutor.

The case opened deep racial wounds in the North Carolina town — the players are white, the accuser, who was hired as a stripper during a house party last March, is black.

Last month, the North Carolina State Bar charged Nifong with violating professional conduct rules for making inflammatory comments about the accused players. Those charges could lead to Nifong's disbarment.
