Pinochet's Chile
-- NPR's Anne Garrels reports the people of Chile are again examining the legacy of General Augusto Pinochet. He ruled Chile for 17 years as its dictator, then in 1990, Pinochet agreed to democratic elections if he could take over the top job in the army. Now Pinochet is scheduled to step down from that position next month and become a senator-for-life. Supporters credit the former dictator for transforming the economy, but opponents criticize his human rights record and the growing gap between rich and poor.
