The federal government held its first public hearing last week on whether polar bears should be listed as an endangered species.
The Interior Department has proposed listing the polar bear because of the accelerated loss of sea ice on which it depends.
It would be the first time the Bush administration added any animal to the list. It would also be the first animal to be listed because of climate change.
Another hearing will be held Monday in Washington, D.C., with one more taking place in Alaska on Wednesday.
