Bratz Dolls To Disappear From Toy Shelves
RENEE MONTAGNE, host:
NPR's business news starts with an early holiday gift for Mattel.
(Soundbite of music)
MONTAGNE: Just in time for the holidays, a federal judge has granted the toymaker one of its big wishes. The judge has ordered a rival company to stop selling a doll that's undercut sales of Mattel's Barbie dolls. MGA's Bratz dolls are sassier and more skimpily dressed, and they've been hugely popular among young girls. But Mattel says MGA stole the idea for Bratz because it came from a designer who was on Mattel's payroll at the time.
A judge has already sided with Mattel. And last night he issued an order that The Wall Street Journal calls a sweeping victory for Mattel. The judge has banned MGA from making, producing, or licensing the dolls. He did give MGA a stocking stuffer. The company can wait until after the holiday shopping season to remove its Bratz dolls from store shelves. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
