Barnes And Noble Launches Kindle Competition
STEVE INSKEEP, host:
POST-BROADCAST CORRECTION: It is incorrect that Amazon e-books are only readable on the Kindle. Amazon e-books downloadable on the Kindle can also be downloaded and read on the Apple iPhone and Apple iPod touch, using the Amazon Kindle for iPhone application.
NPR's business news starts with some competition for Kindle.
(Soundbite of music)
INSKEEP: Amazon's digital book-reading device, Kindle, faces a formidable new rival. Barnes and Noble yesterday launched its own e-bookstore. It claims to have many more titles available than Amazon - 700,000. Barnes and Noble is taking a different strategy. Rather than making its e-books readable only on one device, as Amazon does with the Kindle, Barnes & Noble is offering e-books that can be read on a number of existing devices. So long as you don't mind scrolling through an awful lot of text, you can use an iPhone or other mobile phones. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
