Next Prop 8 Hearing Will Be Televised: Tune In September 6th

Check your channel lineup to make sure you know where to find California Channel, if you're interested in watching the live broadcast of the next hearing of the same-sex marriage ban (aka Proposition 8) case. The court date, September 6th, is when "a crucial procedural issue in the legal battle over Proposition 8 will go before the California Supreme Court in San Francisco," explains SFAppeal.
At issue remains the legality of who can seek an appeal of the case:
In January, a panel of the appeals court said that federal law, as defined in a 1997 Supreme Court decision, doesn't seem to allow sponsors to defend an initiative when state officials refuse to do so. But the appeals panel said there might be a right under state law, and asked the California Supreme Court to step in and decide that issue.
A court spokesperson cites elevated public interest in the case for opting to televise the hearing. Previously, when the case went before the Supreme Court, a ruling was issued to block the live broadcastof footage from within the courtroom. Hearings held in December 2010 were aired on C-SPAN.
