Topline:

Last month, LAist Studios and Psychic Audio debuted Future Rewind by Next Gen Radio. This five-part series busts the myth of objectivity and proves that journalism is better when we include each other.

It’s hosted by journalist and producer Sandy Chávez, who relates formative experiences from her life growing up in Los Angeles to six important stories originally reported for NPR’s Next Gen Radio. We hear from the reporter of each story about their experiences and insights and learn that the best sources of inspiration are often personal, organic, and heartfelt.

What is Next Gen Radio? For over 20 years, Next Gen Radio has been training aspiring journalists through weeklong audiovisual reporting projects. Competitively selected participants are paired with professional journalists and learn how to report and produce both non-narrated audio stories and multimedia digital narratives in a hybrid newsroom environment.

What will I hear in the podcast? Each episode begins with a personal anecdote that relates to the story you’re about to hear; followed by an interview with its reporter and original reporting on the topic itself. You’ll also hear some fun sound design and what it sounds like when a small team of passionate and compassionate women come together for the first time to produce a podcast.

How can I listen? All episodes are now streaming wherever you get your podcasts, as well as on the project site. Visit to find more content and learn about the series.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
