LAist City Treks: Let's explore LA on foot! (And then grab a bite to eat)

LAist City Treks is all about exploring LA and SoCal on foot. Over the next 10 weeks, we're venturing into new neighborhoods and communities — feeding our Fitbits and Apple Watches while we get to know places that we normally only see though a car window as we drive on by.
Two people walk on a dirt trail, with rolling green hills rising off to right, and a wash running along the left. A mural is also coming into view on the left.
Believe it or not, this is right in the middle of LA: LAist City Treks is a new series dedicated to giving you the experience of "getting away from it all" without ever leaving the city.

With our free press under threat and federal funding for public media gone, your support matters more than ever. Help keep the LAist newsroom strong, become a monthly member or increase your support today.

Welcome to LAist City Treks, a series of easy hikes and walks that will help you explore the parts of Los Angeles and SoCal that we rarely get to see — or only see through the car window.

Expect to get about 5K steps, and plenty of photos for your social media channels. Even better: Each adventure includes recommendations for grabbing a quick bite to eat once you're finished. If you go, tag us @LAistOfficial and #LAistTreks

Why now?

Remember that thing called the pandemic? When we were all itching to get out of our houses and get back to real life? Well, many of us are struggling to do just that. Enter, LAist City Treks. This is your invitation to get out and get moving with easy hikes and walks that give you a great excuse to check out a new part of town.

Why it matters

Even if you love L.A. like we do, you can get stuck in routines and patterns and sticking to the places you know. So we're switching it up: Over the next 10 hikes, LAist City Treks will take you to new places and neighborhoods. It'll be the perfect way to spend a weekend morning or afternoon.

What to expect

Each hike and walk includes a detailed map, key route conditions — Where to park? Is it dog friendly? — and restaurant recommendations in the neighborhood.

Let's get started

At LAist, we focus on what matters to our community: clear, fair, and transparent reporting that helps you make decisions with confidence and keeps powerful institutions accountable.

Your support for independent local news is critical. With federal funding for public media gone, LAist faces a $1.7 million yearly shortfall. Speaking frankly, how much reader support we receive now will determine the strength of this reliable source of local information now and for years to come.

This work is only possible with community support. Every investigation, service guide, and story is made possible by people like you who believe that local news is a public good and that everyone deserves access to trustworthy local information.

That’s why we’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission. It just takes 1 minute to donate below.

Thank you for understanding how essential it is to have an informed community and standing up for free press.
