Topline:

Every month, How To LA’s podcast host Brian De Los Santos and Imperfect Paradise’s podcast host Antonia Cereijido share what’s going on around L.A. for their segment “Social Calendar.”

Why it matters (LA): Art exhibitions. Parties. Outdoor spaces. There’s so much to do in L.A. everyday.

Brian and Antonia speak with Marty Preciado, an arts and culture executive who serves as commissioner for L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis and is an expert in what’s going on around the city. She also works to advance community strategies for The Ford, L.A. Phil, L.A. Opera and other organizations. Antonia jokingly — but truthfully — dubbed Preciado as the “Carrie Bradshaw of arts and culture” of Los Angeles.

Her pick: Preciado recommends checking out the 100 Carats: Icons of the Gem World at the Natural History Museum. She says it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event where viewers can see large, rare gems that have never been on public view (all with the exception of one…listen to the podcast to find out which gem). The exhibition is included with general admission. All L.A. County residents can enjoy free admission to the Natural History Museum and La Brea Tar Pits every weekday from 3 p.m .to 5 p.m. The fabulous gem exhibit is currently on view until April 2024.

Preciado says you can take your tías and feel like Elizabeth Taylor with all the “uncut gems” (hi, Julia Fox) at the exhibit.

Favorite Preciado quote: Presenting our social calendars on the podcast is like “dating the city.”

Social Calendar: Dating The City

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
