We're looking for some enthusiastic interns to work with us at LAist during the fall.Responsibilities vary widely, and the hours will flexible, but we do want someone who will commit 8-10 hours a week to the site. We may work together for a portion of the time, while at other times you may be working from the comfort of your own home/dorm room/favorite cafe or in the field, depending on the tasks at hand.

Interns assist Editors with compiling and researching posts, fact-checking, and photo editing, and ultimately create their own posts for the site. Assignments can fall into all the categories on the site: News (including Sports and photojournalism), Arts & Entertainment, and Food. There is no pay, but there are opportunities to attend events to cover for the site, though that will not be the primary focus of your term. (Sorry: If you just want to go to concerts, this isn't the internship for you!)

Detail-oriented students, photographers, social media enthusiasts, videographers, and anyone with a passion for Los Angeles and the skills to write about it are encouraged to drop us a line. Strong writing and communication skills are vital, while familiarity with blogging protocol and Google apps extremely helpful. Interns will ideally exit the experience with published items for their portfolio, insight into digital journalism practices and social media strategy, and, if applicable, college credit.

To apply, please email a cover letter, resume, availability Mon-Sun for September to December 2012, and any other relevant information to editor@laist.com, subject "FALL 2012 INTERNSHIP."

Application email deadline: 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2012.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
